So... uh... yeah...
Alan and I kind of got invited to my ex-coworker’s wife’s birthday party. They’re nice people. Significantly better, more human, and more friendly than my current coworkers. We went to their wedding and such. Generally, I like them quite a bit. But we know her because I worked with her husband. Fifty people were invited to this party, and the two of them are literally the only...

“ATTENTION PARENT: As your child’s physician today, I feel the situation calls...”
– An imaginary piece of paper that I wish existed, to be used when parents force me to describe an upcoming clinic procedure in gory detail in front of their increasingly-terrified child. (I just spent 10 minutes hearing a child scream in terror, purely from anticipating the shot which she needs for...

Women's restrooms are strange places.
Seriously, here I am, in the bathroom, and there are two girls peeing and talking on the phone. They’re not even slightly ashamed. They don’t even try to hide the flush noises. How is this normal?

I will probably always be slightly rebellious.
It’s just who I am. I get more motivation from people telling me I can’t than from people telling me I can. If you tell me to “don’t do [something],” I’m either going to be really pissed at you, because seriously, how dare you try to control me, or just do it anyway, because I really don’t give a shit. Although, to be fair, I get more out of people...

I hate it when
I’m writing a post and my phone battery dies and the tumblr app isn’t skilled enough to autosave a draft of my post. Grrr.

BMJ article: Increasing numbers of "cash-strapped"... →
cranquis: I’m really not sure about the reliability of the survey method… but at least those students are getting some early experience at getting screwed over by the sad financial state of healthcare reimbursement. :(

“The scientists by large know more liberal arts, than the science known by...”
– Neil DeGrasse Tyson. I agree. But it really makes me sad when I hear scientists saying that literature is useless because it’s all about unreal stories, or that art in general is meaningless because is subjective. It’s not ok this either. (via scipsy)

Conversations I have at work: Are you plotting...
Coworker: *trying to open a drawer that regularly sticks because it's wheel is slightly rusty* You know, this is very dangerous.
Me: Why, just pull really hard. It's always been that way, since I started in this lab 3 years ago. No one has ever gotten hurt.
Coworker: No, I mean not the drawer. We keep the masks inside. If there was a toxic chemical spill, I don't think we would want to be spending a minute trying to get to the masks.
Me: They aren't hazmat masks. They're flimsy cloth things that stop your spit from getting into your assays. If something that toxic spilled, I'm not waiting around for a mask. I'm leaving. Out the door. Gone. And also, the most toxic thing we have in the lab is probably methanol... Maybe ammonia. So...
Coworker: Well what if we had something more toxic. And what of the door locked?!
Me: It doesn't lock on the inside. Even if it was locked on the outside, the inside's fine.
Coworker: Well what if it wasn't this once!
Me: Then I guess someone would be trying to kill us!
Coworker: Aha! Yes! That's it, isn't it. Someone COULD be trying to kill us.
Me: I'm done having this conversation.

Because I'm all about the work stories today.
The coworker who works across the bench from me (the same one i wrote about in the post yesterday who spies on me and goes through my things) has a hoarding problem. This person collects every spare thing in the lab and puts it in drawers or on the bench or anywhere where s/he can access it again (but always forgets about it). S/He has the messiest, most cluttered bench in the lab, because s/he...

Purchasing
I do all the purchasing for my lab. I’m in charge of the grant money and what gets bought with it. I have a policy regarding orders: If you want it ordered, write it on my shopping list. I don’t want to hear about it. I don’t want you to remind me about it 100 times. I don’t want you to ask my permission. I just want you to write it down on the piece of paper and when I get...

Things that I'm getting a bit tired of...
Being “watched,” “spied on,” or otherwise having my personal space invaded. 1.) I work across the bench from another person in our lab. Often times said person isn’t working, but is staring across the bench at me. Our eyes and most of my face are hidden behind the shelf, but s/he just stares at my work. Follows my hands, etc. It makes me really nervous, like when a...
