So…. I was at my grandmother’s Christmas party last night, and my creepy ass stepmom was there. My dad asked for more photos of me and my sister for christmas, so I logged onto facebook on my phone to show him a few choices I could send him. My step mom looks at it, and says, “Oh! This is the conversation that pisses me off more...
Everyone Else: So, you're graduating.
Me: Yes.
Everyone Else: So, what are you doing about medical school?
Me: I'm still going. I'm just taking a year or two off. It's very expensive to apply, you see, and I can't afford it right now. On top of application fees, I couldn't afford the tuition, and I'm already in debt.
Everyone Else: If you need help with the finances, I can help you out.
Me: Thank you, that's very kind, but there are other factors as well. First of all, the average age of a freshmen entering medical school is 24. Second, they prefer applicants with life experience. I want some of that. I'm going to work in one of the hospitals for a while, and apply next yearish. It's a lot of work that I would prefer to put off until I'm done with classes.
Everyone Else: You know, if you take a year off, you'll never go back.
Me: Yes, I will. This is what I want, and delaying it won't stop me from achieving that.
Everyone Else: It's very hard to go back. Just ask so and so. They'll tell you. You'll never go back if you don't do it now.
Me: You don't even know me. You don't know what I want or how hard I've worked to get through undergrad. You see me once a year, and use me to brag about how awesome your family is, how your such and such a relative is going to be a doctor some day and save lives. You don't realize what it's like to work two jobs, volunteer, officer two clubs, and maintain an honors worthy gpa. You don't know what I've given up to get this far. Congratulations to your daughter in the Ivy league school who has never lifted a finger in her whole life and got a B in Gen Chem. Congrats. I'm proud of her. But don't tell me what I will or won't do with my future. It's mine to make, and your input means nothing to me. So take your disdainful tone elsewhere. And FYI- Pediatricians are REAL doctors....

It seems backwards to me
